O2M 6sp hub (uses bolt - notice raised shoulder): ĮDIT: There's also the possibility the entire 6sp left axle assembly will fit without issue, but Im sure there was at least an inch difference in height when I stood them up next to each other.

I know there are different styles & mounting depths of that inboard CV.Ģ004 Jetta GLI O2M 6sp left axle spec (~19" long) Ģ002 Golf TDI O1M Auto left axle spec (~21.5" long) Ģ000 Beetle 2.0 O2J 5sp left axle spec (~22" long) Ill pop off the inboard CV joint (transmission side) to see if its also larger on the 6sp axle (I assume so) maybe I can use the 6sp axle yet and make up the ~inch difference on that end by swapping on a taller inboard CV. then discovered the 6sp CV wont fit the 5sp axles. Just my luck I pulled the spindles from an 2004 Jetta GLI O2M car and the CV/axles from a 2004 GTI 20th O2M car. This was why I thought Id just slap the 6sp CV onto the 5sp axle. I cannot get the nut threaded onto the 5sp CV end due to a tall protruding shoulder on the 6sp hub (on which the bolt sits). Problem is the 6sp hubs are deeper with the bolt-on end vs. I can slide my 5sp CV into the 6sp hub no problem, splines match up. 5sp CV end splines: The CV end splines are the same b/n the two - ie. I have those axles but them using the nutted hub, I assume they also have the smaller diameter shaft splines like my 5sp axles. "Just go with the 108mm flanges, and VR6 5 spd axles it uses a nut, and be done with it.". Id have to believe all O2M axles, CVs and hubs are same specs from any of those cars above, regardless of body or engine (again US market only), but Im open to correction. Im sure others have run into this issue, what was your solution ?įrom my research, the O2M 6sp available in US market MK4 cars only came in the 2004+ Jetta GLI and Golf GTI (24v, 20th, R32) models. Its my understanding all three (technically 6) shaft lengths are different. I already have the Gas O2M 6sp trans here, but wrong ratios for TDI.Īnyone know what the automatic axles use for lengths and cv joints ? - the smaller 5sp stuff or larger 6sp ? - maybe I can mix & match all three to find the combination I need with minimal expense.

Guessing $150-200 driveshaft shop charge.ģ) New Raxles 5sp axles built with 6sp outer splines ($$ im sure, if even possible)Ĥ) Ship in a O2M DRW from Europe for a full 6 speed TDI conversion, to use standard 6 sp axle assemblies. so now I have a couple decisions to make ġ) Re-press 5 speed "nutted" hubs into the spindles $150 wasted (2 new FAG bearings + shop press charge).Ģ) Cut and weld the 6 sp shaft splined end onto the 5sp shafts.

Shop that pressed the new bearings calls me says no go - the 5 speed axle splines that slide into the outer CV joint are smaller on 5sp than 6 speed. Also picked up a set of V6 axle assemblies heard they're a little beefier.įigured no problem, Ill swap the 6 speed CV joints onto the 5 speed axles so they bolt into the 6sp hubs properly. Had new FAG bearings pressed into spindles while Im at it to avoid notorious VW wheel bearing issues later - yes I kept the 6 speed hubs. Swapped MK4 GTI/GLI O2M 6 speed brakes onto my MK4 TDI O2J 5speed car, which meant swapping in the GTI/GLI spindles with the 6 speed hubs (6 speed = "bolted" hub 5 speed = "nutted" hub).
